What is the WellMan360° Charter?

The charter represents a palpable demonstration of a company's commitment to the health and well-being of its male employees.

Why is it only for male employees?

60,000 UK men of working age die prematurely every year at a rate one and a half times that of women. The causes are well known: heart disease, smoking, prostate cancer, diabetes to name but a few. Unfortunately men are notoriously slow to react to early warning signs of illness and rarely ever seek medical attention until something has actually gone wrong. Suicide is more common in men, as all forms of alcohol and substance abuse and it is widely accepted that depression and anxiety are under-diagnosed in men. Furthermore men, especially the middle aged, have shown little interest in actively seeking out healthy lifestyle or the resources available to achieve this.

Whilst there are numerous physical and mental health programmes devoted to women's care, there are few equivalent services for men and UK men's health statistics lag well behind both nationally and internationally.

131 million days were lost due to sickness absence in the UK in 2013. Working-age ill health costs the national economy £100 billion a year and employers face a bill of around £9 billion for sick pay and associated costs. Poor health is one of the main causes for premature retirement and severe skill shortages are already apparent in many industries. A stress free healthy workforce will result in reduced sickness absence, higher staff retention, increased productivity and improved morale with obvious benefits for employers.
